Weekly Wanderings {2016 week 21}

I’ve attempted green smoothies a few times, but either they’re really gross, or just not quite tasty enough for me to make more than once.

Not so with this Sassy Sweet Green Smoothie. Son and I like it so much, we’ve made it several times already!

Green smoothie

It’s not bitter, not too thick… perfect. And healthy!

Gotta drink those smoothies so I can have my chorizo breakfast sandwiches… 😀

When a bunch of avocados ripen all at once, just blitz ’em with some sweetened condensed milk (to taste) for sinh tố bÆ¡ (Vietnamese avocado shake), Son-style. (… and then top it with more sweetened condensed milk, because yum!)

Avocado smoothie

Bread from our favorite bánh mì shop, mayo, Maggi sauce, store-bought pâté, homemade chả luÌ£a (two types – turkey and pork), homemade đồ chua (pickled carrots and daikon), cucumber, cilantro. In other words, a very delicious homemade bánh mì.

Coming home from a trip to Asia (Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Japan) means we are craving alllll the Asian foods.

Especially bánh mì.

Always bánh mì.

Found a new Vietnamese restaurant in Little Saigon that we’re addicted to.

Caramelized clay pot catfish

Their canh chua cá (sour fish soup) and cá kho tộ (caramelized clay pot catfish) are both total comfort food.

It’s that time of the year again… June gloom!

We’re kind of addicted to these homemade bánh mì.

With homemade chả lụa (the meat), homemade đồ chua (the pickles), home-grown cilantro, fresh cucumber, bread, a smear of mayo and a dash of Maggi sauce… can you blame us?

Weekly Wanderings {2016 week 19}

We always, always come back from trips to Japan with tons and tons of goodies to give out to our family.

Those half-moon cookies are a favorite – we’ve bought them the last two times we’ve gone to Japan, and everyone loves them!

Japan loot

Also, those camambert cookies (“Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory”). They sound odd, but ohmygod they are so good.

They were giving out samples at the shop in the airport, and we totally went back for seconds. And then bought more to bring home. 😀

These rusk cookies were pretty tasty too.

I preferred the kinako…

… while Son liked the matcha ones better.

Green tea rusk cookie

We really, really enjoyed these black sesame pastries.

And of course, all sorts of different flavors of Kit Kats are a must anytime you go to Japan!

Japanese kit kats

While we were in Japan, we were also working remotely. We’d go out during the day, then go back to our room after dinner and stay up until 6am working and attending conference calls with our client. Unexpectedly, these odd hours meant that when we came home to LA, we haven’t been nearly as jetlagged as we usually are after travelling – instead, we’ve been naturally waking up before sunrise, and have been perfectly awake all day!

Early mornings led to early morning runs – I like this schedule!

Ocean

The beach is so quiet in the morning.

Beach

I found a weird bug at the beach. It was huge!

When we bought our house, it unexpectedly came with some koi! They were teeny tiny when we moved in, and now, four months later, they’ve already almost doubled in size.

Hủ tiếu. Again.

Hu tieu

Mix in the tasty meat sauce (possibly the best part!).

Son decided our house needed more trees. This meant that I got eaten alive by said tree on the drive home from the nursery…

Palm tree seeds. Such a vibrant color!

Garlic pork. Tasty.

Yakisoba. Not bad, but not as good as we’d hoped it would be.

My very first attempt at replicating the omelet we had over omurice on our Japan trip. Not bad… but not quite there yet.

Green curry salmon. Tasty!

We love pho (of course), so I loved reading about the history of pho.

Weekly Wanderings {2016 week 18}

One last bowl of tasty hủ tiếu… before we head off to Asia for three weeks!

Hu tieu

Weekly Wanderings will be on haitus while we’re gone, but not to worry – there will be lots of posts about everything we do (and eat!) in Asia, after we get back!

Every recipe in Tokyo Cult Recipes (which the publishers sent me for free) looks delicious! Now to find the time to cook something from it…

Tokyo Cult Recipes

Sakura green tea, swirling in the cold-brew teapot we’re kind of obsessed with. Bought one to try, then bought five more… (my favorite cold-brewed tea to drink is oolong; Son really loves green or jasmine tea).
