Weekly Wanderings {2016 week 11}

Eating healthier is a lot easier when lunch looks like this:

Spinach salmon salad

We had family visiting this week, so healthy eating went out the door *real* quick.

Worth it for this tasty sukiyaki udon at Kagura, though.

Sukiyaki udon

We treated ourselves to M.B. Post in Manhattan Beach for our guest’s birthday. So much deliciousness.

Their bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuits are TO DIE FOR. Especially with the maple butter that comes with it! So good.

There’s a good reason these are called “fee fi fo fum fries”…

Fee fi fo fum fries

Roasted brussels sprouts with emmental, hazelnuts, sage. It’s vegetables so it’s good for you, right?

Brussels sprouts

Steamed mussels with green curry, Chinese sausage, and coriander rice. Quite delicious.

Green curry mussels

Pan-roasted Wild Ling Cod, with bacon butter, maitake mushrooms, agrodulce onions.

Wild ling cod

BBQ Moroccan lamb belly, with harissa caramelized onions, Japanese eggplant. Essentially lamb-y pork belly. Soooo good.

Chai tea soft serve in a brioche beignet, with orange tapioca and caramel. We almost didn’t get dessert… luckily we did, because this was one of our favorite dishes of the meal!

Our new house has an avocado tree, and the avocados are HUGE! We hear this means it’s time to pick them, but… we don’t have a ladder. Yet.

So this is the only one we’ve been able to get our hands on so far, just because it fell on its own. Dragon egg!

Huge avocado

Taco time! Scrambled eggs with beans, vegetarian sausage, Mexican cheese, salsa, avocado. Tasty, filling, mostly healthy… all the things I want in a breakfast.

Breakfast tacos

I found a slug.

I think I got a pregnant bell pepper…

My salad for our weekly Sunday dinner: arugula, spinach, white beans, pine nuts, capers, pear, cranberries, balsamic dressing. Turned out pretty darn tasty.

We had pies for Pi(e) Day! Of course.

My brother’s girlfriend made the most AMAZING curry pot pies, based on this recipe from Use Real Butter. So freaking delicious.

Curried chicken pot pies

Mom made waffled apple pie (yum).

Waffled apple pie

AND she also made her classic apple pies, but in cute small pans. So good.

Happy Pi Day!

Things I want to eat:

I really, really like potato on pizza. Especially when caramelized onions and a yummy sauce are involved.

Really want to try these curried chickpeas.

I adore boba milk tea, Son loves flan, so obviously we’d love milk tea flan with boba!

Curry pan are my weakness.

Really intrigued by this turmeric latte. I’m not sure about this whole turmeric drink trend, but at the same time this does sound like it might be really tasty. I’ll let you know if I try it!

Very much want a slice of this gigantic cinnamon toast crunch.

Dew drops.

Dew on a leaf

Homemade manju. SO GOOD.

Manju

My go-to lip balm is no longer being made, so I’ve been searching around for something new. Most lip balms feel funky on my lips, until I found EOS! I may or may not have gone slightly overboard…

EOS

Kale and brussels sprouts salad that Vivian made. Very tasty.

Kale and brussels sprouts salad

Attempting to eat more protein, so breakfast these days is two fried eggs, two vegetarian sausage patties, and a slice of toast. Not bad.

Breakfast

Of course, when I have to fast for routine bloodwork, all bets are off. Breakfast burritos are a post doctor’s appointment tradition.

This tree was so vibrantly red, I just had to take a picture.

Things I want to eat:

My dad really, really wanted to try chilaquiles after hearing about them from a friend. He never got to (and I’ve never had them either), so I’m thinking I need to try out this recipe sometime soon?

Miso, pork belly, noodles. All the good stuff.

Potato garlic soup. Comfort food.

So badly want to eat these coconut curry chickpeas with wilted greens.

This white bean soup popped up in my feed this week and I really want to make it – I have all the ingredients!

This sounds like a tasty, satisfying meal.

Intrigued by miso eggplant in gyoza.

Fried fish, tasty sauce, lettuce wraps, yum.

I’ve never had a bubble and squeak, but it sounds so tasty.

Bacon, potato, cheese, bread. I mean, obviously.

Weekly Wanderings {2016 week 9}

My aunt and uncle that we visited last week sent us home with a box of these Rustic Bakery cheese coins. Can you say “addicted”?

Hello, old friends.

Banh tet (a rice roll filled with pork belly and mung bean paste that’s often eaten around the Lunar New Year).

Banh tet

My current go-to easy lunch.

Avocado bean salad

Son found these and made me put them on while I was cutting onions. I gotta say, they do help… even if it does make me look ridiculous… 😉

Allison wearing goggles to cut onions

Made this garlic and herb vegan cheese for our first family Sunday dinner in our new house. It was a win!

Business trips to the Bay Area mean visits with family, if possible.

And visits with our Bay Area family mean lots, and lots, and lots of delicious food. 😀

Xiao long bao

Excellent xiao long bao (soup dumplings) (possibly the best I’ve ever had!) and lots of other Chinese food with my relatives and some of their friends.

Pork belly bao

Delicious doughnuts from Doughnut Dolly.

Also, a brand of kombucha that is sadly only available in the Bay Area. I didn’t think I’d like kombucha, but this was pretty darn tasty. Son’s kind of addicted.

Jelly-filled doughnut

I’ve never been a tea person, but now I’m kind of addicted to the tea you get with Chinese meals. So good.

Fried oysters.

Crispy duck. This is what we came here for.

Nom.

Crispy duck skin crepe

All sorts of deliciousness.

Have I mentioned there were only four of us? We always order WAY too much food. Not that I’m complaining. 😀

Various foods

A noodle dish called “ants on a tree”.

This was the surprise winner of the meal. I mean, that crispy duck was amazing, but I couldn’t stop going back for more of these noodles.

Clams. I was stuffed by then, but Son really liked these.
